Lehighton’s eighth annual Christmas in the Park is Sunday

Lehighton’s Christmas in the Park is Sunday.

Hosted by the Lehighton Borough Parks & Recreation Board, the event is Sunday and features 172 trees and eight wreaths.

The trees will arrive on Thursday, and people may decorate them Friday through Sunday, said Autumn Abelovsky, secretary, Lehighton Borough Parks & Recreation Board.

Abelovsky said the trees in the borough’s Upper and Lower parks “have become one of the most talked about and anticipated annual events in our small community.”

She said the tree lighting ceremony is attended by about 1,000 people each year.

“Just as many, if not more, stroll the parks throughout the season to take in the decorations, lights and partake in the spirit only a small town like Lehighton can bring,” Abelovsky said. “It truly is like a ‘Hallmark Movie Story.’”

Abelovsky said food vendors will open at 3 p.m. and will include funnel cakes, candied apples and cotton candy (Ott’s Concessions); doughnuts, hot chocolate and coffee (DonutNV); hot dogs (Lehighton High School baseball team); filling and gravy and Mac ’n Cheese (Lehighton High School marching band); and pierogies, halushki and basked goods (Lehighton Fire Department Auxiliary).

She said there will be free kids crafts; Santa will arrive on a Lehighton Fire Truck at 4 p.m., youth can enter to win kids bicycles (bikes donated by Lehighton Orioles) from 3-5 p.m. Bike giveaway announcements will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Upper Park Amphitheater.

Abelovsky said the tree lighting ceremony will take place at 6 p.m.

She said the Parks & Recreation Board will sell Lehighton Christmas in the Park ornaments in front of the Municipal building.

Abelovsky said the Pale Moon Players will stroll through the parks caroling as well, and encouraged guests to check out the new fountain lights that feature over 10 minutes of color. She said they will also offer a live Facebook Event Virtual Tree Tour showcasing all the trees for those unable to come to the parks in person at 7 p.m. Dec. 10. “To me, Lehighton’s Christmas in the Park is what this community is all about,” Abelovsky said. “Not only the spirit of the holidays but the spirit of a small town. When I look around on the night of the tree lighting ceremony, I see new and old friends, family members, acquaintances, former teachers and some people who I may not have had the opportunity to talk to in a few years. This event gives us all the opportunity to reconnect and enjoy our community and the people who make it special.”
