The Borough of Jim Thorpe is gearing up for a holiday kickoff celebration Thursday night.
The 2nd Festival of Trees lighting is set for 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Park.
An idea for the event emerged from the desire to spread holiday cheer and unity among residents after the challenges posed by the pandemic, according to event committee members.
Mayor Michael Sofranko expressed the community’s initial interest in having trees in the park several years ago, and now, with the event gaining momentum, he added, the vision is coming to life.
“We started with 40 trees in the first festival last year and have expanded to 60 trees this year,” Sofranko said.
Residents, businesses, and groups could buy a four-foot tree for $45. Many of those who purchased trees opted to bring attention to special causes or remember and honor loved ones who have passed away
Santa Claus will makes a special appearance after arriving in the park via a police escort.
The festive atmosphere, Borough Manager Maureen Sterner said, will be enhanced by Christmas music, courtesy of D.J. Monroe, and other entertainment that promises to keep the holiday spirit alive.
“I really give everyone on the committee a lot of credit because this is really starting to grow and take off,” Sofranko said.
In addition to the visual spectacle, attendees can indulge in one of a variety of refreshments available in the park.
