No new taxes slated for Tamaqua borough

Tamaqua residents likely won’t be paying more in property taxes next year.

Borough council on Tuesday voted to tentatively adopt and advertise the 2024 budget.

The proposed spending plan will hold the line on millage.

The tentative budget, which will likely be adopted in December, keeps real estate taxes at 23.75 mills.

“At this rate, this has no tax increase,” Council President Brian Connely said. “So that’s where we are at for the upcoming year.”

Looking at the budget, Connely said the borough did “pretty well.”

“There are certain areas that again, we did less than we like, but in the end, we’re all OK. I think we’ve seen most of it in regards to increases in supplies, increases in chemicals, and chemical usage for our plants, some overtime,” Connely said. “But I would have to say they are normal things.”

Connely said he asked Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt, who prepares the budget, about increasing the borough’s annual contributions to a number of nonprofit organizations.

He suggested increasing the borough’s allotment to the four fire companies and the Tamaqua Rescue Squad by $1,000 each. He also asked to contribute an additional $100 to the Tamaqua Fire Police, and $1,500 more to the Tamaqua Public Library.

The adjustment wouldn’t impact taxes, Connely said.

Mayor Nathan Gerace asked whether the borough could contribute funds to the Tamaqua Senior Citizens. With no place to gather in Tamaqua, the group has been paying to rent meeting space at the Coaldale Complex.

Eventually, Gerace noted, the seniors group will meet at a new borough community center. “It would keep them afloat until they get into this building,” Gerace said.

He suggested contributing $1,700 to the group.

Steigerwalt said he could add the suggested contributions to the tentative budget. Taxpayers wouldn’t be impacted by the additions.
