CYO District 5 holds Spelling Bee

The District 5 CYO Spelling Bee was held recently at St. John Neuman Regional School in Palmerton Campus.

There were 14 students from Carbon and North Schuylkill counties who participated in the spelling bee, with the winners to take part in the Diocesan Spelling Bee.

St. John Neuman Principal Christopher Heery led the introduction, prayer and pledge.

Teachers Corinna Wehr, Frances Lenahan and Carolyn Gowin were judges. Eighth-grade student Daphne Gowin assisted.

Top spellers

Sixth grade:

1st place: Addison Engleman, St. Jerome’s Regional School, Tamaqua.

2nd place: Luke Young, St. Ambrose Parish and St. Jerome’s Regional School.

3rd place: Lily Gregory from St. John Neumann Regional School.

Seventh grade:

1st place: Shane Moyer from Ss. Peter & Paul Parish and St. John Neumann Regional School.

2nd place: Andrew Mummey from St. Richard’s Parish and St. Jerome’s Regional School.

3rd place: Danielle Slowick from Our Lady Queen of Peace and St. John Regional School.

Eighth grade:

1st place: John LeClair from St. Joseph Parish and St. Jerome’s Regional School.

2nd place: Noah McGinley from St. Joseph Parish and St. Jerome’s Regional School.

District 5 CYO is composed of students from the Carbon and North Schuylkill Deaneries. Phil Liszka serves as the District 5 Commissioner.
