Coaldale man gets probation after plea deal

A Coaldale man who tried to torch a 1994 Chevy sedan in June had all but one charge against him dropped in a plea deal that got him 12 months on probation.

Timothy S. Keer, 59, was charged by borough police officer Joseph F. Krebs with reckless burning or exploding; resisting arrest; disorderly conduct; criminal mischief; and public drunkenness.

On Wednesday, Keer admitted to disorderly conduct. Schuylkill County Judge Christopher Hobbs agreed to drop the remaining charges.

Police on June 21 were dispatched to East Ruddle Street after a witness reported Keer tried to set the vehicle on fire. The witness’s report was backed up by a video of Keer walking on the street and lighting the car on fire. Keer was recorded igniting a potato chip bag then tossing it onto the front floor of the parked car.

Keer told the police he told a man that he was going to burn the vehicle and asked him to not say he was there. As Keer walked away, the man went for water to put the fire out.

The man told police that Keer was “crazy and drunk” and said he didn’t contact police immediately because he thought he could extinguish the fire.

He also gave police the name of the man who owned the car. The owner then contacted police and told them he wanted to press charges. The Chevy was worth about $3,000, he said.

After police showed Keer the video of him walking down the street, lighting the chip bag on fire, and tossing it into the car, Keer admitted to doing that.
