Where We Live: Sleepless night with the diamonds

Ferris Bueller said life comes at you fast.

That was certainly the case for a customer who had an unintentional and extended stay inside a safety deposit box in New York City’s World Diamond Tower last week.

Yes, you read that right. An unsuspecting customer blissfully retrieving his prized possessions inadvertently found himself locked in the vault due to a rather inconvenient misunderstanding.

It’s safe to say that not everyone gets to experience life inside a vault, surrounded by some of the most valuable gems in the world. So, let’s give the chap a round of applause for living the dream - at least for a night.

The World Diamond Tower is home to many diamond-related businesses, and DGA Security oversees the vault where the brave “guest” was trapped. You can’t help but wonder how employees discovered his presence.

Enter the heroes of the story: the New York Fire Department. In their efforts to free the man, they relied on an unusual line of communication including a security cameras and a phone inside the vault. It’s like something straight out of a Hollywood heist film. I can almost hear them saying, “Cut the red wire, not the blue one.”

Here is where the plot thickens. The vault, as it turns out, was no ordinary door with a handle. It was one of those nifty timer-locked contraptions. You know, the kind you’d find in a spy thriller where a hidden room is protected by lasers and gadgets. It wasn’t quite as glamorous as a James Bond film, however.

Desperate to spring the hapless hero from his unintentional underground escapade, the firefighters attempted to channel their inner action movie stars. Armed with cutting tools and determination, they began their journey into the unopened vault. It was all going well until they ran into a metal plating roadblock, leaving firefighters no choice but to halt their rescue mission.

As it turns out, patience is indeed a virtue. When it became clear that the vault guest had a reasonably comfortable supply of oxygen, the decision was made to wait for the timer lock to graciously release him. It’s not every day that you get to experience the thrill of a countdown clock in real life. The magical moment finally arrived at 6:15 a.m. on a Wednesday - the timer lock clicked, the vault door swung open, and the customer emerged, probably with a sigh of relief that could be heard throughout the Diamond District.

So, what’s the moral of the story? Well, life can be unpredictable, and sometimes, you end up in places you never imagined - like a diamond vault. It’s a reminder to always double-check your surroundings and never underestimate the power of timer locks. And remember, when life hands you lemons, make the best of it.
