Lehighton Downtown Initiative resumes

The Lehighton Downtown Initiative has offered to reimburse Lehighton for two months’ worth of salary that had been earmarked for its former Main Street Manager.

Councilman Ryan Saunders, who serves as president of the Lehighton Downtown Initiative, said at Monday’s borough council meeting that all of the LDI’s credentials remained intact, and the group plans to continue its revitalization efforts.

Saunders informed council that the LDI is willing to refund the borough $1,667 for the last two months of this year, plus two weeks severance pay, that would have been paid to the former Downtown Lehighton Main Street Manager position that had been held by Bambi Elsasser.

Borough Manager Dane DeWire noted that the downtown manager pay was extended until the end of severance, and added he believes the borough should be reimbursed.

Last month, it was announced that Lehighton’s Main Street Manager position had been eliminated.

Kathy Henderson, executive director of the Carbon Chamber & Economic Development Corporation, said the board of directors “just felt it was in the best interest that we go a different route.”

Henderson praised Elsasser for her time spent serving in that capacity.

As a result of that decision, Saunders announced last month that the LDI would resume operations.
