Lansford council gets 3 new members

Six candidates vied for four seats on Lansford Borough Council in Tuesday’s General Election.

Top vote-getters were former police chief Jack Soberick with 367 votes, former mayor and business owner Michele Bartek with 357 votes, incumbent Bruce Markovich, who serves as council president, with 350 votes, all Republicans, and Democrat Joseph Butrie, a former councilman, with 290 votes, according to unofficial tallies. Both Jack Soberick and Bartek had also secured slots on Democratic ballot in the Primary, as well as their own party’s nomination.

Incumbent John Turcmanovich, a Republican who serves as council vice president, received 279 votes and Democrat Mary Soberick, a former councilwoman, garnered 261 votes.

Bartek said she wanted to give the people a voice, build up the police force and business district, and improve the quality of life for families, while Markovich, who was first appointed to council in 2018, said he wanted to continue progress in town. Butrie ran on building a strong police force, completing unfinished project and putting the borough back on the right track.

There were also 296 write-in votes cast, according to unofficial tallies from the county. The write-ins, if all cast for the same candidate, could prove to be an upset in the council race. The outcome of the write-in votes will be determined when the election is certified.
