As prices continue to rise across the board, Lehighton doesn’t intend to get lost in the shuffle when it comes to its garbage pickup.
Borough Council on Monday agreed to advertise the 2024 garbage contract. The measure passed 6-0. Councilman Darryl Arner was absent.
Before the vote, borough secretary Brenda Kreitz said that a prebid meeting with potential bidders will be held before a finalized contract being drafted.
“Prices keep going up,” Kreitz said.
Councilman Donald Rehrig reiterated concerns that its garbage provider, Tamaqua Transfer & Recycling, hasn’t been sticking to the terms of the contract.
“They’re going through alleys at 2 a.m.,” said Rehrig, who added that’s unacceptable and does not comply with the terms that had previously been agreed to.
In July, council said Tamaqua Transfer & Recycling was not following the contracted time of 3 a.m. to clear the business district, bypass and school zones only.
Council then discussed several potential changes.
Council on a 5-1 vote in November 2020 awarded a three-year contract to Tamaqua Transfer and Recycling in the amount of $1,435,800 from 2021-2023. The company had previously been the borough’s trash hauler.
