Pleasant Valley’s Bear Facts newspaper is back
Pleasant Valley High School is getting its newspaper back.
Superintendent James Konrad announced at the school board meeting on Thursday night, “I’m happy to announce that the first edition of the digital version of The Bear Facts will be published next week on Nov. 10.”
The Bear Facts newspaper will be available on the high school’s and school district’s Web page under announcements, Konrad said.
In August, the future of The Bear Facts was uncertain. It and eight other clubs were crossed out in the Student Activities section of the high school’s Student-Parent Handbooks for 2023-2024. The other clubs on that list included the literary magazine called The Scrivner; three performing arts clubs: the Improv Club, Shakey’s Players and the Thespian Society; three academic clubs: Scholar’s Outreach, Model U.N. (United Nations), and Math Club; and the DOOS Club.
The school district cited various reasons for why the clubs were crossed out, although not all of these reasons applied to every club. The reasons included low participation rates, issues with holding after-school meetings, finding advisers, and more.
Konrad said the school district had posted the adviser position for the newspaper and there was some initial interest, but no one came forward to run it. Journalism is offered at the high school as an advanced course, and The Bear Facts is product of that course.
“We have a new teacher teaching that course, which is exciting, but we also want to make sure he’s acclimated to move us from paper to digital and all the other big endeavors we have for The Bear Facts,” Konrad said.
The newspaper got a little bit of a late start, but Konrad said the goal is to increase the frequency of the publications.
“It’s going to be something that is part of the curriculum and the daily course work for the students,” he said.
In addition to The Bear Facts, Konrad said that the high school also has a news broadcast called PVTV will have information about events from the previous month and items for the upcoming month.
