Editor’s note: We’ll be publishing candidate profiles through Saturday in advance of the general election on Tuesday.
Democrat John Huddleston is challenging incumbent Republican George Warden for the position of Monroe County prothonotary. The salary is $82,167.
The Prothonotary has administrative control and responsibility for keeping and maintaining all official civil documents and records.
George Warden
Town: Stroudsburg
Background: Before being elected to my three current offices (Prothonotary, Clerk of Courts and Clerk of Orphans’ Court), I managed the building and opening of hotels for an international chain, was the Conference Service Director for Lehigh University and then owned and operated my own quality inspection company in the petroleum industry for over a decade.
Why are you running for office: I still have a lot to give back to the Monroe County Court System. When I came to the offices it was a largely paper driven operation. Now we are fully computerized with some of the best case management systems in the commonwealth. We have over 23 million pages of documents scanned and permanently preserved. In the next four years I look forward to completing our “paper on demand” project and going paperless
What are your three main priorities if elected: We designed and implemented a new civil case management system. Last year when we went live with electronic filing for any civil case at any time of day. We Implemented PFAD system that provides information to law enforcement across the commonwealth regarding parties involved in domestic abuse situations and is critical in protecting victims from domestic violence. Implemented the Criminal Case Management System for criminal, juvenile and dependency cases. We were the first county in the commonwealth to go live with an e-filing system.
Anything else you’d like to add: Life time of community service - 23-year Coast Guard Auxiliary member. I founded the “Hour of Honor” on Courthouse Square during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, for five years this became a community monthly event. Received many awards: Good Neighbor Award American Red Cross, Division Service Award United Way of Monroe County for Distinguished Volunteer and the Community Recognition Award from Women’s Resources of Monroe County - Community Partner in helping Ending Domestic & Sexual Violence.
John Huddleston
Town: East Stroudsburg
Background: John Huddleston is a native of Monroe County and a graduate of East Stroudsburg University. He paid for his way through college while working full-time and building a career with Weis Markets. His experience also includes sales, purchasing, human resource recruiting, and operations management with several national and regional companies including the American Skiing Company, Natural Grocers, HEB, and The Fresh Market. He is currently employed in Store Management with Weis Markets.
Why are you running for office: I am running for the office to give back to my hometown and community, and to put my skills and experience to work for the voters. I believe in term limits and feel that our elected officials, including current local incumbents, should not hold the same office for decades.
What are your three main priorities if elected: I will bring my past and current business experience to the position, and focus on bringing the office data systems up-to-date. I will ensure the security of our documents, receipts, and disbursements. As a current business leader in today’s competitive environment, I believe there is a need for the leader in any role, and especially for an elected representative to be present and available on a daily basis.
Anything else you’d like to add: As the people’s elected representative in the office, the primary mission is to ensure wise use of the voters’ taxes while ensuring safe and secure filing of court records, while still providing friendly and efficient service. As prothonotary, I would treat the role with the same level of responsibility and integrity I have needed to run successful business operations.
