Schuylkill returning $100,000 to the state

Schuylkill County will give back $100,981 that it didn’t spend to the state Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs.

The funds were only to be used for intervention/treatment services for drug and/or alcohol for people who are uninsured or underinsured, with the exception of the state general assistance funds.

The amount breaks down to a substance abuse prevention and treatment block grant for drug intervention treatment, $42,857; a substance abuse prevention and treatment block grant for alcohol intervention/treatment, $21,208; and state general assistance funds, $36,914.

Drug and Alcohol Program Fiscal Manager John Reed, on behalf of Administrator Elaine Gilbert, on Wednesday requested commissioners’ approval to complete the refund.

Commissioners Chairman Barron L. Hetherington noted that the refund was not because the program staff wasn’t doing their jobs, but rather because not enough people who were qualified for the help applied for the services.

“This department has done its best to allocate this money,” he said.

Also on Wednesday, the county 911 Communications Center hired Melanie Shirley of Schuylkill Haven as a per diem telecommunicator at $20 an hour, retroactive to Oct. 11.

In other personnel moves, security guard Thomas “Lefty” Dobrolsky of New Philadelphia will retire as of Oct. 27.
