Carbon group giving out sludge-free signs

Save Carbon County representatives will attend the Carbon County commissioners meeting at 10:30 a.m. Thursday to announce a new campaign to encourage consumers to support Carbon County farmers by buying directly from “sludge-free” farmers.

Yard signs saying, “This is a Sludge-Free Farm” will be provided to farmers at no cost. Farmers should call 415-847-1607 and lave their name, address, and phone number. Signs for display at their farm will be delivered at no cost.

“Ninety-five percent of Carbon County farmers do not use sewage sludge as fertilizer,” said Linda Christman, president of Save Carbon County. “We are urging consumers to buy produce, meat, milk, and animal feed directly from responsible sludge-free farms.”

Save Carbon County opposes the use of sewage sludge as fertilizer because of the many pollutants found in the sludge including “forever chemicals,” heavy metals, and poisons.
