West Penn Township’s latest bid for a substantial grant for the second phase of work on J.E. Morgan Memorial Park has again been rejected.
Board of supervisors Chairman Tony Prudenti announced that the township’s application for a Department of Community and Natural Resources grant was denied.
Prudenti then asked the township engineer to check into why the township didn’t get the grant after it adopted a resolution in March to apply for a DCNR grant in the amount of $111,945, with the total project amount $141,945.
The township’s first request for a DCNR grant was turned down in January. The board originally submitted the grant in October. Along with that, the board adopted several resolutions for the DCNR grant, such as the application, requesting $216,593 from DCNR for the continued development, and a maintenance agreement for the park.
The park has two pavilions, picnic tables, a concession stand, playground, restrooms and playing fields.
Soon, the park will have its own water supply.
Eventually, area youth sports organizations will use the playing fields.
Park improvements are being made with a $60,000 grant from DCNR. The township is chipping in a $30,000 match.
