Mahoning hopes to move into building by February

Mahoning Township officials hope to move into their new headquarters on Route 443 by February.

Township supervisors discussed the status of the building, saying the push is on to be in the building by then.

In May, bids for the township’s new headquarters came in under its anticipated price tag.

Township secretary Natalie Haggerty said that the four apparent low bids came in at $915,201.

Supervisor Ronald Reeser said at that time he would like to have a meeting with architect Jeffrey Biehn of Watkins Architect, before the board took any action.

In April, supervisors on a 4-0 vote ratified an advertisement to receive bids for the building renovation at the former Diaz building at 2175 Blakeslee Blvd., Drive West.

That came after supervisors on a 4-0 vote in March agreed to bid out the former Diaz building.

In July 2022, supervisors and township police Chief Audie Mertz met at the site, west of Normal Square, with Biehn.

The purpose of that meeting was to review the renovation project for the building that would eventually house the township’s offices and police department.

Biehn heard feedback from supervisors, including board Chairman Robert Slaw, who said he was on board as long as the price tag was under $1 million.

The former medical office on Route 443, just west of Normal Square, was purchased in July 2021 at a cost of $375,000.

The two-story building and 14 acres of land was assessed at $595,000.

Once renovation work is complete, the Mahoning Township Police will use the lower level, and the township offices will be located on the second floor.
