Jerusalem UCC celebrating 175 years

Jerusalem United Church of Christ is celebrating its milestone 175th anniversary this Sunday during its 10 a.m. worship service and then open house starting at 11:30 a.m.

“We are prepared for at least 200 people. We will have sandwich wraps, snacks, and lots of cake to share with our congregation, their families and other guests,” said Wendy Hoppel, president of the church consistory.

The service will take place in their recently redone sanctuary. The pews, carpeting and paint are new. The original hardwood floors were refurbished. On Thursday morning, Hoppel and a few other ladies were decorating the sanctuary with leaves, pumpkins and other Fall décor.

During the service, the Rev. Dr. Bonnie Bates, conference minister of the Penn Northeast Conference of the UCC, will present a plaque commemorating the 175th anniversary. State Rep. Doyle Heffley will have a certificate honoring this milestone.

Hoppel said Jerusalem’s former pastors are invited to the event.

“We have no idea who will be able to attend. Some are actively serving other churches and will be leading those worship services elsewhere. Others are retired and moved south,” she said.

After the service, they will officially bless Hope Hall, which is their new social hall and kitchen, and Friendship Room, which is decorated and furnished to look like a café. There are tables and chairs and fall décor.
