Carbon County commissioners

The Carbon County Commissioners acted on or discussed the following items during their weekly meeting last Thursday. Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein was absent.

• Approved the adult probation supervision funds agreement for the years 2022-2027 with the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole.

• Authorized the advertisement for bids for a parcel on East/South Center Avenue, Jim Thorpe. The parcel is 1.4 acres in size and is being sold in “as-is” condition for no less than the fair market value of $37,000.

• Approved a proposal from Carbon Engineering Inc. of Summit Hill to oversee contract preparation and bid administration for the Peaceful Knights Women’s Shelter after bids were rejected for two of the three contracts. The cost is $11,000, which will be taken out of the general fund. The project received $163,000 through Community Development Block Grant COVID funds.

• The county hopes to unveil its proposed 2024 operating budget during the Oct. 26 commissioners’ meeting.

• Approved an award of funding in the amount of $69,300 for the 2023-2024 Juvenile Probation Services Grant for salary reimbursement for the juvenile court office.

• Approved an allocation letter for the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services for the 2023-2024 MATP program. The initial allocation is $1,486,187.

• Ratified an agreement with UGI Utilities for a right of way agreement to extend the natural gas pipeline through the county parking lot.

• Commissioner Rocky Ahner announced that the county was awarded a $7,000 safety grant that it had applied for earlier this year. The grant will be used to cover the cost for first aid kits for every department, a submersible training manikin that was already purchased, and other safety items.

• Commissioner Chris Lukasevich announced that the election office will be conducting the testing of the voting machines this week. He added that the office received 2,908 mail-in ballot applications, as well as 94 absentee ballot applications, which are being processed and prepared for mailing.
