Polk Township ready for second Environmental Day
The Polk Township Parks and Recreation Commission is getting ready for its second annual Environmental Day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the township’s walking park.
The free event is full of family fun, including games, environmental crafts and music. It will be held rain or shine.
“This is a wonderful event for both children and adults. There will be a pumpkin patch, petting zoo and activities for the children, and information about our area’s environmental opportunities for adults,” Nancy Wright, vice chairwoman, told supervisors during their meeting Monday.
Event attendees can learn about fishing, recycling and wildlife.
Participating organizations include PA Fish and Boat, PA Game Commission, Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority, Monroe County Master Gardeners, Monroe County Garden Club, Trout Unlimited, Aquashicola Pohopoco Watershed Conservancy, Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center, Lenape Nation of PA, Astronomy in the Community, Salem-St. Paul Church, Snyder’s Orchard, Polk Township Veterans Commission and Polk Township Historical Society.
“The Parks and Recreation Commission is looking forward to the event. Last year was a success and this year we are excited to be including even more exhibitors and environmental information,” Wright said.
The historical society will have township history books and artifacts on display at their table.
Sammi, a mounted groundhog known locally for her annual Groundhog Day prediction at Cherry’s Sunset Diner, will also be at the event for attendees to visit and get more information about Groundhog Lodge #6.
The township is borrowing a cider press from Chestnuthill Township and will be pressing cider, chairman Robert Butler said. The cider is free.
The Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will sell hot dogs, chips, drinks, pumpkin roll and apple crisp.
Claudio T. Stabile, from Boy Scout Troop 102, will bring telescopes to view the sun. For his Eagle Scout project, he built an astronomy observatory in the Polk Township North Field this summer, with help from his troop members and father. He also set up a new club called Astronomy in the Community, which will have information at Sunday’s event.
DJ Johnny Johnson will provide the afternoon’s music. Pocono Wildlife will have a table and will take animals out from their carriers to show guests.
The Polk Township Walking Park is located at 121 Polk Township Rd., Kresgeville.
In other business:
• Supervisor Brian Ahner complimented Stabile, who spoke briefly about the completion of his astronomy observatory. “You did a really nice job,” Ahner told Stabile. In addition to Environmental Day, Stabile has an astronomy event Oct. 14 at Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown.
• Solicitor James Fareri said the continuation of hearing for the proposed Effort solar panel farm will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company in Kresgeville. It is open to the public and he encouraged residents to attend.
• Fire chief Billy Tippett announced trunk-or-treat is from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30 outside the firehouse in Kresgeville. Parking will be in the field next to the firehouse.
• Supervisors voted in favor of purchasing a color printer so the secretaries and zoning officer can print pictures and other documents for meetings. They also voted to purchase permitting software that has four programs in one. This is a three-year contract with a higher price for the first year due to building everything and lower price for the second and third year.
• A zoning change hearing will be held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 23.
