Holiday assistance

The PVEN has announced its Holiday Toy Program is now open. The program helps provide new clothing and toys for children ages birth to 12 years old from Chestnuthill, Eldred, Hamilton, Jackson, Ross and Polk townships.

It is a supplemental program.

Angel Tree sign-ups will continue through Oct. 28.

Toys for Tots program sign-ups began go through Nov. 30.

Angel Tree applicants are automatically registered for Toys for Tots.

Certain documentation is needed to apply: proof of address for current month (lease or property tax information), birth certificate and/or custody paperwork per child(ren) being registered, proof of household income for current month (pay stubs, cash assistance if applicable) must include all members of the household.

Registered children need three wishes and clothing/shoe sizes. There is a $50 limit per gift. Gift cards will not be accepted.

Keep Them Alive

The American Legion Riders of Post 927 are hosting an Open-to-Community event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday with a Keep Them Alive ride and rally.

Submissions due

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center has announced its 2024 Photo Contest and invites folks to send in photos that showcase Monroe County’s finest natural resources. Winners will receive maple syrup from the Meesing Sugarbush and a 2024 MCCD calendar.

Submissions are due Saturday. One grand prize winner will also be featured on the cover of the 2024 calendar.

Monday bingo

The American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, is again hosting an open to the public bingo night on Monday, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and play beginning at 7 p.m.

SAL meeting

Sons of the American Legion, Post 927 will meet at 6:30 p.m. and at the Legion Post home in Gilbert at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

GOP meeting

The West End Republican Club is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at Cherry’s Family Restaurant in Kresgeville.

Anyone planning to eat dinner before the meeting should come an hour earlier.

Altar & Rosary

All ladies of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church parish are invited to come to the Altar and Rosary meeting next Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the café to learn how to make Rosaries.

Fall cleanup

Eldred Township will be having its fall cleanup from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 29, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Sept. 30.

Non-electronic clean up days are Sept. 29 and 30 with the gates open at 7 a.m. Friday and closing at 3 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The event is free (except tires) to all township residents. They can bring all the things not suitable for disposal in regular trash, such as mattresses, old lawn furniture, gas grills etc.

The township does recycle metals, so residents are asked to keep those things separate.

Tires can be brought for a fee of three different levels.

The next event of this type will be in the spring of 2024.

Precious sale

Zion Lutheran will hold a precious junk sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 29 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 30. The sale includes lots of treasures looking for a new home.

The kitchen will also be open.

No early birds please.

PVEN needs

The PVEN Food Pantry can use donations of gravy, pancake mix, French fried onions and pancake syrup. The Clothing Closet can use body wash, toothbrushes, razors and shaving cream; also cleaning supplies, paper towels and laundry detergent. Also needed are sheets, towels and blankets, as well as baby food and baby formula.

Solar hearing

A hearing pertaining to building a solar panel farm on 200 acres near the intersection of Bear Road and Long Mountain Road is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company, 511 Interchange Road in Kresgeville.

Block shoot

The Kunkletown Rod & Gun Club will hold a block shoot and meat raffle beginning at 11 a.m. on Oct. 1. The public is welcome.

The event is at 122 Gun Club Lane in Saylorsburg. It is 12-gauge shotgun only.

Environmental Day

Polk Township is holding a township Environmental Day from noon to 4 p.m. at the Polk Walking Park on Polk Township Road Oct. 1.

Various sweet treats will be for sale courtesy of Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Bakers and church members have been asked to fill out a leaf stating, “I will promise to protect God’s creation by...” Those leaves will be collected and will be hung on the church’s wooden tree that will be displayed at the event and later at the church.

ReStore opening

A ReStore is a home improvement store and donation center. It’s a place to buy new and gently used products at a discount and Monroe County Habitat for Humanity anticipates opening it in Marshalls Creek in early 2024.

The Monroe Habitat unit is seeking volunteers for a variety of volunteer positions.
