Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 21

Four area volleyball teams picked up victories on Thursday, including undefeated Panther Valley and Pleasant Valley.

The other winners included Jim Thorpe and Northwestern.

VOLLEYBALL

Tri-Valley-Panther Valley

After a tight first set, Panther Valley won convincingly in the next two to earn a 25-23, 25-13, 25-11 Schuylkill League victory over Tri-Valley.

Riley McArdle finished with 10 kills, 10 digs and three aces for the Panthers, who remained undefeated at 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the league.

Maddison Maynard contributed seven kills to the PV cause, while Abby Benack added 13 assists and four aces.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 5-4 and 3-4.

Pleasant Valley-Whitehall

Rylee Ruggiero had 10 kills to help Pleasant Valley sweep Whitehall 25-15, 25-16, 25-14 in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

Ruggiero also added three digs and four blocks to help the Bears stay unbeaten at 11-0.

The winners received 24 assists, 11 digs and two kills from Brianna Bruckman, while Lexi Womack contributed seven kills and four digs.

Other key contributors included Kara Miller (five kills, three digs, two blocks), Hannah Akob (five kills, 12 digs, three aces) and Alexis Wilkes (nine digs, two aces).

Jim Thorpe-North Schuylkill

A strong performance from Brooke Mitzen helped Jim Thorpe gain a 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 Schuylkill League victory over North Schuylkill.

Mitzen ended with 19 kills and 16 digs.

The Olympians also received eight kills from Brianna Snisky, and six kills, 24 digs and five aces from JaeLynn Browdy.

Others helping Thorpe improve to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the league included Kelsey Patton (five kills, two blocks) and Maggy Hallihan (36 assists, five digs and four aces).

The loss dropped the Spartans to 5-5 and 3-5.

Palmerton-Northwestern

Kylie Nagle posted her 1,000th-career dig, as Northwestern earned a 25- 11, 25-4, 25-6 Colonial League sweep over visiting Palmerton.

Nagle finished with 14 digs in reaching her milestone.

The Tigers’ Norah Silfies added eight kills, two blocks and three aces, while Shannon Green contributed 15 assists and three aces.

Northwestern, now 6-6, also received four kills from both Emily Christopher and Claire Thomas.

The loss dropped Palmerton to 3-9.

Marian-Nativity

Nativity rallied late to gain a 19-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-18, 16-14 Schuylkill League victory over rival Marian.

Despite the loss, Abbey Kluck finished with 27 kills, 16 digs and five aces.

The Fillies - who saw their winning streak snapped at six - also received 37 assists, 16 digs, three aces and three kills from Julia Meiss.

Other top players for Marian included Isabella Horvat (seven kills, 16 digs), Alena Lombardo (six kills), Megan Reaman (25 digs, three assists) and Zoe Katona (20 digs, six aces).

Minersville-Weatherly

Minersville picked up its first win of the season, defeating Weatherly 25-8, 25-23, 22-25, 25-9 in Schuylkill League action.

The Wreckers, still winless at 0-10, did gain a decision in the third set and received six kills and 13 digs from Kelly Reiner.

Rachel Rosenlund added seven digs and five assists to the Weatherly cause, while Abby Weston finished with eight digs and three kills. Taylor Davidovich chipped in with five assists and a kill.

BOYS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe scored five goals in the first half en route to a 7-4 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Noah Geiser tallied twice in the opening half and added an assist for the Olympians, who won their third straight contest.

Cale Heaney contributed a goal and two helpers to the winning effort, while Ehren Hassler added a goal and an assist.

Other Thorpe goals came from Kayden Spence, Jack Sanwirja, and Henry Snyder, with Kayden Spence chipping in with an assist.

Tamaqua received a pair of goals and a helper from Cooper Ansbach. Aiden Schlier and Wyatt Steigerwalt also tallied for the Blue Raiders.

The Olympians are now 6-4, while Tamaqua dropped to 4-5.

Lehighton-Pottsville

Jaxson Strauss scored a goal in each half to help Lehighton post a 5-1 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

Strauss got the Indians on the board first, and then gave the visitors a 4-1 lead midway through the second half.

Jesse Waksmunski added a goal and two assists, while Gabe Reed added a goal and a helper.

Lehighton, now 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the league, also received a tally from Ever Schaeffer.

Nativity-Weatherly

Nativity rolled to a 7-0 Schuylkill League win over Weatherly.

Goalie Michael Davies made eight saves for the Wreckers.

Weatherly fell to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in the league, while Nativity improved to 6-1 and 5-1.

FIELD HOCKEY

Palmerton-Saucon Valley

Sydney Frantz scored the game’s only goal to lift Palmerton to a 1-0 Colonial League victory over host Saucon Valley.

Sarah Sabo made four saves for the Blue Bombers, who won their fifth straight game to improve to 7-3 overall and 6-3 in the league.

Northwestern-Pen Argyl

Northwestern used a hat trick from Cara Thomas to gain a 3-0 Colonial League victory over Pen Argyl.

Carsyn van Norman assisted on two of the goals to help the Tigers win their third straight game.

Hannah Gober also added an assist as Northwestern improved to 8-1.

No. Lehigh-Moravian Acad.

Grayson Domzalski had a hat trick and Rylin Becker scored twice to help Moravian Academy roll to a 10-0 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Bulldog goalie Daisy Richards finished with 16 saves.

Nolehi slipped to 0-9, while Moravian upped its mark to 5-3.

GIRLS SOCCER

Wilson-Northern Lehigh

Katelyn Barthold scored four goals to help power Northern Lehigh to an 8-0 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

Dekota Barthold added two goals, and Mikayla Gordon also tallied as the Bulldogs won their sixth in a row.

Nolehi, now 8-1, outshot the Warriors by a 20-3 margin.

Whitehall-Pleasant Valley

Whitehall gained a 2-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Colleen Sommers accounted for both Zephyr goals, one off a free kick and the other on a shot at the 18.

Bears keeper Sadie Rizzo finished with 14 saves.

The Zephyrs improved to 6-4, while PV sports an identical 6-4 mark.

Minersville-Tamaqua

Minersville edged Tamaqua 2-1 in a non-league contest.

Jenna Cullen scored the game-winner for the Miners (8-2) at the 35:54 mark of the second half.

The Blue Raiders (6-4) received a goal from Sarah Hope off a feed from Kimmy Rudy. Goalie Cecilia Ulicny finished with five saves.

GIRLS TENNIS

Northampton-Pleasant Vy.

Brianca Pridham and Ryan Rosenberg both won in singles action and then teamed for a doubles win to lift Pleasant Valley to a 4-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Northampton.

PV’s doubles team of Molly Schaffner and Mariana Barragan also registered a straight-set win to help the Bears improve to 7-9.

Blue Mountain won every match in straight sets to gain a 7-0 victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Eagles have won nine straight and improved to 12-2.

The loss dropped the Olympians to 4-9.

Tamaqua’s Emily Antonio won at No. 1 singles, but Pottsville took every other match to gain a 4-1 victory.

Antonio earned a convincing 6-0, 6-2 decision as the Raiders fell to 6-8.

Pleasant Valley-Pen Argyl

Lydon Patascher shot a Pleasant Valley school record of 69, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears dropped a 400-417 decision to Pen Argyl.

Patascher finished three-under on the par-72 course at Riverview Country Club. PV’s Ben Bush also shot a solid round of 76, but the Bears fell to 5-11.
