Matt Johnson reached a scoring milestone as the defending state champion Northwestern boys soccer team secured its spot in the District 11 playoffs with a win to stay unbeaten on Monday.

BOYS SOCCER

N’western-Saucon Vy.

Matt Johnson added his name to the record books as Northwestern rolled to a 12-0 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

Johnson had two goals, making him the program’s all-time leading scorer, now with 82 career goals. Johnson, who also had an assist, surpassed the previous mark held by 1992 graduate Troy Everett. Caelan Stangil and Francesco Ponte each finished with two goals for the Tigers (11-0 overall; 8-0 CL). Jack Mauro added a goal and two assists, while both Cole Mertz and Zachary Grim added two assists.

Isaac Frey (goal, assist), Jacob van Lierop (goal), Austin Bittenbinder (goal), Timoty Zellner (goal), Caden Mertz (goal), Nathan Kinzel (assist) and Benjamin Bachman (assist) also contributed to the winning effort.

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

Six second-half goals helped Jim Thorpe pull away for an 8-1 Schuylkill League win over Pottsville.

Kayden Spence led the Olympians (4-4 overall; 4-2 SL) on the attack with a hat trick, while both Cael Heaney and Noah Geiser each added two goals and an assist. Ehren Hassler (goal, three assists) and Conor Holland (two assists) both helped fuel the attack, while Blake Berberio made four saves.

John Snyder scored for the Tide, who slipped to 0-7-1 (0-5) on the season.

Sch. Haven-Tamaqua

Wyatt Steigerwalt led Tamaqua with two goals in a 3-0 victory over Schuylkill Haven in Schuylkill League play.

Cooper Ansbach scored the game’s first goal and assisted Steigerwalt’s second goal for the Blue Raiders (4-3).

Kevin Bazan assisted Steigerwalt’s first goal of the game and recorded a six-save shutout for the Blue Raiders.

GOLF

Schuylkill League Championship

Tamaqua’s Peter McGinley won a playoff round at the Schuylkill League championships to record a second-place finish.

McGinley tied North Schuylkill’s Jude Maziekas with an 80.

In the girls tournament, Jim Thorpe’s Anna Figura earned a fourth-place finish with a score of a 100, while Panther Valley’s Mikayla Yuricheck placed fifth with a 112.

Blue Mountain’s Luke MacDonald (79) and Nativity’s Delaney Walborn (98) each won individual titles.

Colonial League

Championship

Nortwestern’s Erik Mather placed third at the Colonial League Championships.

Mather fired an 82, two strokes behind winner Colin Sarnoski of Southern Lehigh and one shot behind runner-up David Tervalon of the Spartans.

Avri Chandler posted a fourth-place result among the girls, shooting a 93.

Ethan Kozlowski shot an 83 to place fifth in the boys tournament, while Addison Remaley was sixth with a 97 in the girls competition.

Jared Reinhard shot a 90 on the day to finish 19th. Aiden Leister finished 25th with a score of 92.

Eastern Pennsylvania Conf. Championships

Stroudsburg’s Hunter Probst and Nazareth’s Camryn Hoff won boys and girls titles at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championships.

Northampton won the overall team title with a combined score of 317, while Nazareth and Parkland finished second and third, respectively.

Probst won the boys title with a 72, while Hoff fired an 85 to win the girls title.

Pleasant Valley’s Lydon Patascher finished with an 82, while Ben Bush ended up with a 92 for the Bears.

Saucon Vy.-Lehighton

Lehighton won its third straight, posting a 3-1 victory over Saucon Valley.

Gabby Brown sparked the Indians (7-2 overall) with two goals, while Maggie Pagotto also found the back of the cage. Grayson Frey posted four saves in the win.

Ashley Rostkowski scored for the Panthers (2-3-2), while Madi Kares had an assist. Lillian Wiegand made three saves.

Liberty-Pleasant Vy.

Liberty blanked Pleasant Valley for a 6-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win.

Emily Tavares sparked the Hurricanes (4-3-1 overall) with a hat trick, while Ava George added two goals. Julianna Zumas (goal, assist), Cozette Frack (assist), Danielle Walz (assist) and Tula Sobrinski (assist) all added to the scoring for the winners.

Maria Altemose recorded eight saves for the Bears (0-7-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

Marian-

Lincoln Leadership

Camryn Shistel led Marian with three goals in a 14-1 victory over Lincoln Leadership.

Teaghan Biros, Caitlyn Kovatch and Lizzie Pitikus each had two goals for the Fillies (2-7), who have now won back-to-back games.

Kassandra Hibbler, Kendall Van Puten Vink, Janyssa Monks, Mikayla Tom and Brieanna Hernandez each had a goal apiece for Marian, while Maddie Kattner made 12 saves.

Palmerton-Wilson

Nataly Walters scored three goals to help Palmerton cruise to an 11-0 win against Wilson in Colonial League play.

Hadlee Lake, Ella Baumgardt and Hannah Barry each scored two goals for the Bombers (7-3), while Riley Gerhard and Aubrey Frable also registered goals.

Schuylkill Haven-Weatherly

Schuylkill Haven rolled to a 10-0 win over Weatherly in Schuylkill League play.

Taylor Haag led the Hurricanes (4-4) with two goals.

Kendall Gerhart made 17 saves for the Wreckers (0-6).

GIRLS TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-Notre Dame ES

Jim Thorpe knocked off Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg for a 4-1 win.

With this victory, the Olympians’ (2-8) girls’ tennis program moves to 15-14 all-time against the Spartans – dating back to their first match in 2004.

Ashlynn Miller, Keira Reese and Chloe Tantala swept singles play for Thorpe, while Ada Finsel and Noelanie Sepulveda earned a win at No. 1 doubles.

VOLLEYBALL

Pleasant Valley-Allen

Pleasant Valley kept its perfect start to the season intact with a 25-7, 25-7, 25-7 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Allen.

The Bears improved to 9-0 overall thanks to a solid performance on the front line, as Lexi Womack (10), Kara Miller (six), Hannah Akob (six) and Rylee Ruggiero (six) combined for 28 kills.

Brianna Bruckman dished out 26 assists, while Akob (eight), Womack (six), Alexis Wilkes (five) and Emily Shupp (four) combined for 23 digs.

Jim Thorpe-Sch. Haven

Jim Thorpe swept Schuylkill Haven for a 25-5, 25-10, 25-15 win.

Brooke Mitzen sparked the Olympians (7-1) on the attack with 19 kills, two aces and two digs, while Kelsey Patton contributed eight kills and six blocks.

Brianna Snisky (16 service points, six kills, two blocks, three aces), JaeLynn Browdy (22 digs, nine service points, two kills, two aces) and Maggy Hallihan (37 assists, 12 service points, four aces) helped Thorpe win its fourth straight.

Lehighton-Notre Dame GP

Notre Dame Green Pond swept Lehighton 25-22, 25-16, 25-14 in a non-league match.

The Indians also fell in the JV match 2-0.

Northwestern-Pottsville

Pottsville remained unbeaten with a 22-25, 23-25, 17-25 non-league win over Northwestern.

Kylie Nagle led the way for the Tigers, who slid to 4-6 overall, with 32 digs, two kills and two aces. Shannon Green added 17 assists, while Norah Silfies finished with six kills.

The Tide moved to 10-0 on the season.
