The Relay for Life of the Anthracite Region is Saturday at the Tamaqua Area High School Stadium on Sept. 23.
The event will feature survivor and caregiver laps, parade of teams and all the camaraderie people have come to associate with the event during its nearly 30-year run in the area. The theme is “Celebrate! Remember. Fight Back!”
Gates open at 5 p.m. for on-site registration and opening ceremonies are at 6 p.m.
People can participate individually or choose to be part of a team of family, friends, co-workers, club members or church members to help with the American Cancer Society fundraiser. Each registrant pays a $10 fee and collects donations from friends and family. Participants walk as much or as little as they like during the hours of the Relay for Life.
To participate, visit http://cancertelethon.org/walk/ or call 570-805-4555.
The event will feature music by Hatter at 7 p.m. and a Luminaria Service at 8 p.m. For the service, the track will be decorated with lighted luminaria and individuals will carry candles as they walk the track. It will begin with a survivor lap. For more information on the service, visit http://cancertelethon.org/candles/
The closing ceremony is at 9:30 p.m. Food and drink will be available for purchase, and a basket raffle will be held to benefit the Relay fundraising.
