Sheehan appointed to lead Carbon election board

Carbon County’s former treasurer, who was appointed earlier this year to serve on the county election board, has been named as the chairman.

On Tuesday, the county election board reorganized after Commissioner Chris Lukasevich, who had served as chair of the board this year, resigned. His resignation comes at a time when he will petition the courts to also recuse himself from the election board because of his support for a county office candidate in the general election. He is not running for reelection.

Ron Sheehan, who was later named as the chairman, asked the county solicitor if it was OK to act on this matter because of Lukasevich’s petition to the courts on his position.

Solicitor Robert Frycklund said it was because this was only as chair and not from the board itself.

The petition request from Lukasevich would then need to go before the court to be removed, which the election board does not comment on.

At this time, Lukasevich will remain as a board member; while Sheehan serves out the remaining year as chairman and Gerald Dotter, vice chairman.

In other matters, director of elections Jennifer Ketchledge updated the board on the use of markers on ballots.

Previously, there had been complaints about using sharpies because they would bleed through the ballot and people attempting to write in a candidate would not have enough room due to the thickness of the tip.

Ketchledge said the office purchased fine tip markers and have tested them on previous ballots.

“We will be able to write with those markers and fill in ovals with them,” she said. “They are much better. I tried them out on older ballots and they do not bleed through and you can also read everything that is on the ballot without using a pen or marker.”

Sheehan said that it was important that poll workers be reeducated on the use of markers versus pens on ballots.

Ketchledge said that there will be judge of elections training sessions next week and one of the topics is the purpose of using a marker on the ballot over a pen.
