Carbon County Commissioners

The Carbon County Commissioners acted on or discussed the following items last week:

• Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller approached the board to ask why one deputy coroner request for training was being debated. Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that the reports the county has seen from the coroner’s office show that the deputy, later identified as former coroner Bruce Nalesnik, didn’t pronounce any deaths in 2023.

Miller said that was incorrect, but two of his deputies do not bill their time for pronouncing death and noted that Nalesnik was on a call earlier this year.

He added that Nalesnik is the only one of the seven deputies that is not yet certified in this course for the year and requested that he be allowed to attend the upcoming training. The training is taking place at the 2023 State Coroners Conference in Johnstown.

The matter was brought up to a vote on the personnel report and was approved 2-1, with Nothstein voting against the request.

• Approved an exhibit to the Interoperability and Site Sharing agreement with the state and Pennsylvania State Police, for collection of emergency telecommunications equipment from the state and county or maintained radio towers/facilities. There is no cost to the county.

• Ratified a quote from Johnson Controls of Allentown to rebuild the Lynx/CCURE server at a cost of $7,200.

• Approved a service agreement with LANTA to provide Medical Assistance Transportation Program services through June 30, 2024 at a cost of $113.45 per trip.

• Commissioner Chris Lukasevich reported that the last report the county has received for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program for the county showed $5,332,269 went out to qualified households.
