Lehighton teen writing next chapter of her career

Anna Laible has already covered a UNC-Duke college basketball game and interviewed World Series champion Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker among countless other accomplishments as a Sports Illustrated For Kids writer.

The Lehighton teen is now taking the next step in pursuing her dream of becoming a professional sports broadcaster with early admission to the Hussman School of Journalism and participation in Honors Carolina at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Laible, who received the Times News Outstanding Journalism Student Award earlier this year, is majoring in Media and Journalism and minoring in Spanish and Entrepreneurship.

“I plan on continuing to grow my writing skills in college by writing for mlb.com and I am currently on Season 6 of my ‘Speak Up Sports Podcast’ after publishing over 78 episodes,” she said. “I am 1 of 4 students (out of 5,600) selected for the Innovation Scholarship at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.”

The road to success began with Anna’s graduation from the Laible Homeschool Academy, followed by her achievement of an associate degree in communications from Lehigh Carbon Community College.

A few of the crowning achievements of Laible’s academic career were graduating magna cum laude, demonstrating her commitment to academic excellence and her dedication to her chosen field.

She also presented a senior thesis titled “Title IX’s Impact both now and in the Future.”

“My goal after earning an education at the UNC Chapel Hill and being involved with the Daily Tar Heel, UNC’s newspaper, and other journalism clubs and organizations is to become a professional sports broadcaster and open opportunities for the next generation of females to have the ability to have a career in this field,” Laible said.

Laible has received nominations for two awards from the Internet Baseball Writers Association of America: “Podcast/Video Host of the Year” and “Prospects/Minors/Amateur/College Writer of the Year.”
