Local Roundup: Results from Aug. 31

Four area volleyball teams posted wins on Thursday.

Jim Thorpe, Marian, Panther Valley and Pleasant Valley all gained victories.

Meanwhile, Northwestern recorded wins in two sports - boys soccer and golf.

VOLLEYBALL

Jim Thorpe-Lehighton

Jim Thorpe swept Lehighton, 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 in Schuylkill League action.

The Olympians (2-0) got outstanding balance at the net as Jaelynn Browdy had 12 kills and 7 digs, while Brooke Mitzen (8 digs) and Kelsey Patton each added 11 kills apiece. Brianna Snisky chipped in with four kills and four blocks.

Setter Maggy Hallihan had a strong all-around match for the Olympians with 35 assists, six service points and five digs. Maura Malaska had 10 service points. Defensively, Mitzen had eight digs, Browdy had seven and Malaska added six.

The loss drops Lehighton to 2-1.

Shenandoah-Marian

Abbey Kluck’s 12 kills, 10 digs and four aces highlighted Marian’s 25-13, 25-18, 25-10 win over Shenandoah Valley in Schuylkill League play.

Julia Meiss chipped in with 18 assists, three digs and two aces for the Fillies, who moved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Zoe Katona (five aces, five digs), Megan Reaman (six digs, two aces) and Gianna Griguoli (three kills) also contributed to the win.

Hazleton-Panther Valley

Panther Valley downed Hazleton, 25-27, 25-10, 25-17, 25-19 in a non-league match.

Morgan Orsulak had eight aces, eight kills, 16 assists, and three blocks for the Panthers (2-0). Riley McArdle added 19 kills and six digs, and Abby Benick recorded 16 assists.

PM East-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley recorded a 25-10, 25-9, 25-13 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pocono Mountain East.

Rylee Ruggiero and Hannah Akob both finished with eight kills, while Lexi Womack added six kills and three aces to lead the Bears (2-0 overall; 2-0 EPC).

Brianna Bruckman had 23 assists.

Mahanoy Area-Weatherly

Mahanoy Area downed Weatherly, 25-19, 25-15, 25-9 in Schuylkill League play.

Kelly Reiner had five kills for the Wreckers.

Mahanoy evened its record at 1-1, while Weatherly fell to 0-2.

BOYS SOCCER

Northwestern-Pen Argyl

Northwestern spread the wealth in an 11-0 Colonial League victory over Pen Argyl.

Matt Johnson led the way for the Tigers (4-0; 2-0) with two goals and four assists. Jake van Lierop and Logan Mesics also had a pair of goals with van Lierop picking up an assist.

Caelan Stangli, Jack Mauro and Francesco Ponte all finished with a goal and an assist for Northwestern, while Austin Bittenbender (goal) and Cayden Lloyd (assist) also contributed.

Wilson-Northern Lehigh

Wilson posted a 4-1 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Kellen Bauer accounted for the lone goal for the Bulldogs (1-2 overall; 1-2 CL). The NL freshman has scored in each of his team’s first three games.

James Stock made 17 saves in net for Northern Lehigh.

Palmerton-Salisbury

Salisbury snuck past Palmerton for a 2-1 Colonial League win.

Josh Hudak had a goal and an assist for the Falcons (2-1; 1-1).

Wyatt Spalding tallied for the Bombers, who fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.

GIRLS SOCCER

Northern Lehigh-Wilson

Katelyn Barthold’s hat trick helped Northern Lehigh run away with a 10-2 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

Victoria Henna added a pair of goals for the Bulldogs, who upped their record to 2-0.

The winners also received scores from Mikayla Gordon, Katya Pesesko, Cassidy Snyder and Marielle Jurchenko.

Pottsville-Lehighton

Five second-half goals helped Pottsville post a 6-0 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Abbie Davis and Grace Evans both ended with two goals and an assist for the Tide (3-0; 2-0).

Pottsville’s Kelly Goodman added a goal and an assist.

Goalie Ciara Behrel finished with nine saves for the Indians (0-3; 0-2).

Tamaqua-Blue Mountain

Sophia Cipriano registered four goals to lead Blue Mountain to a 5-1 victory over Tamaqua.

Tamaqua got on the board in the second half when freshman Sienna Stellfox recorded her first varsity goal off an assist from Katie Fredericks. Cecelia Ulicny had 14 saves for Tamaqua.

Blue Mountain, which outshot Tamaqua 22-9, moved to 2-1 while Tamaqua dropped to 1-1.

Weatherly-Tri-Valley

Tri-Valley rolled to a 12-1 Schuylkill League win over Weatherly.

Erin Prete collected the lone goal for the Wreckers (0-2; 0-1).

FIELD HOCKEY

Pen Argyl-Lehighton

Gabby Brown’s hat trick sparked Lehighton to a 5-1 win over visiting Pen Argyl.

Ava Kistner scored the game’s first goal for the Indians (2-1), while teammate Maggie Pagotto capped the scoring with a fourth-period goal. Anna Howland added an assist.

Isabella Graves recorded the lone goal for the Green Knights, who slipped to 2-2.

Lehighton goalie Grayson Frey finished with nine saves.

Emmaus-Pleasant Valley

Melea Weber had a hat trick, and Sarah Schaffer added a pair of goals as Emmaus rolled past Pleasant Valley 13-0 in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play.

With the win, the Green Hornets improved to 3-0. Pleasant Valley fell to 0-2.

GIRLS TENNIS

Hazleton-Tamaqua

Hazleton posted a 4-1 victory over Tamaqua.

Jenna Fernandez accounted for the Blue Raiders’ lone team point with a win at No. 2 singles.

The loss dropped Tamaqua to 4-3.

Salisbury-Northwestern

Northwestern posted a 426-500 Colonial League win over Salisbury.

The Tigers’ Avri Chandler and Erik Mather tied for medalist honors, as both fired an 80.

The winners, now 7-3, also received 88s from both Ethan Kozlowski and Jon Conti.

Lehighton-Pottsville-

North Schuylkill

Lehighton suffered a pair of setbacks, falling to both Pottsville and North Schuylkill.

The Indians (2-8) were led by Griffin Traylor’s 88.

Medalist honors were shared by North Schuylkill’s Bryce Cuthie and Pottsville’s Maxum DiRenzo, who both carded an 82.

Brady Najda led the Bears (9-2) with a low score of 82.

Mahanoy upped its mark to 9-2, while Weatherly fell to 0-10.
