Carbon County commissioners will open bids for two contracts for the Peaceful Knights Women’s Shelter Project in Lehighton on Thursday.
Last week, the commissioners re-advertised bids for electrical and general contracts for renovations on the North First Street location.
The county sought bids earlier this month, but only got one bid for the three contracts advertised.
On Aug. 17, the county opened a single bid for the plumbing portion of the project. The sole bidder, Dave’s Plumbing and Heating Inc. of Palmerton, bid $18,000. The bid was then tabled for two weeks for further review.
The project deadline is Sept. 29, as a Community Development Block Grant to create the shelter ends.
The tight deadline is the result of delays in the project, which originally began with Family Promise of Carbon County for a shelter site in Nesquehoning in the former St. Francis of Assisi church complex.
In February, the commissioners switched the $163,922.13 Community Development Block Grant to Peaceful Knights, allowing the project to move forward before the grant expires.
The new women’s shelter will be located at 131 and 133 N. First St., Lehighton, a few doors down from the already established men’s shelter.
