Rain deters some from West End Fair on Thursday
Gray skies, intermittent rain in the afternoon, and cooler temperatures on Thursday resulted in a smaller crowd at the West End Fair in Gilbert than previous days this week.
“It’s been wet and dreary today. It has been our slowest day so far,” said Nancy Parks, the district office manager for Rep. Jack Rader.
“We are here doing legislative assignments. People are asking us questions, and we go back to the office to find the answers. Some have asked about property tax rebates,” said Parks.
Rep. Rader and Pocono Raceway are hosting a shredding and fall cleanup day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 30 at the racetrack in Long Pond. This is a free, drive-through event.
Monroe County residents can bring four copy-paper-sized boxes per vehicle. They can also bring up to four old tires, outdated prescriptions, faded and worn flags, gently used children’s books and prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses and hearing aids.
Nearby in the flower exhibit building, Bill Withers Sr. and his son, Bill Withers Jr., were looking at the various entries.
“We are soaking wet, but glad to be here today. We have not been here in a few years due to COVID,” said Bill Withers Sr., of Reeders.
His son drove up from Philadelphia, and they spent the day at the fair looking at the livestock, flowers and crafts, and listening to music.
On the main stage, the Honky Tonk Twins performed classic country, Rockabilly, folk, gospel and oldies music to a small audience seated on benches and lawn chairs.
The duo is Jessica Snyder and Willie Barry, both from Frederick, Md. They have been pursuing solo careers since their early teens and became a duo in 2022.
Volunteer firefighters at Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company’s food stand said business was slow Thursday - and it was the opposite of Monday and Tuesday’s large crowds and constant demand for food.
The West End Fair’s Facebook page announced the cancellation of Thursday night’s Black Cat Hell Drivers in the arena, due to inclement weather. Don’t Back Down, the Tom Petty Tribute Band, was still able to perform on the main stage.
Local weather stations are calling for rain throughout Friday. Time Whys is scheduled to perform on the main stage at 3 and 4:30; Cartesion Dance Academy at 6 p.m. in the bandshell; tractor pulls and truck pulls start at 6 p.m. in the arena; and the Uptown Band is scheduled for 7 and 9 p.m. on the main stage.
