Pair charged with attempting to rob laundry mat

Two people have been charged after attempting to rob an employee at a laundry mat along Route 443 Monday morning.

Lehighton Police said that at 7:20 a.m. police were dispatched to the Lehighton Coin Laundry for a robbery in progress.

Upon arrival, it was determined the suspects, Chance Whiteman, 23, and Amanda Moyer, 38, both of Lehighton, were still inside. Police were able to quickly apprehend Whiteman without incident.

Throughout the course of the investigation, it was determined that Whiteman attempted to steal money from an employee of the coin laundry.

A struggle ensued between Whiteman and the coin laundry employee, during which other patrons assisted the employee.

While this occurred, Whiteman’s girlfriend, Moyer, began assaulting one of the patrons. Moyer was also taken into custody as a result of this investigation.

Moyer was determined to be possession of a controlled substance, and both individuals were in possession of drug paraphernalia.

Whiteman was charged with criminal attempt and criminal conspiracy related to the robbery, along with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Moyer was charged criminal conspiracy regarding the robbery, as well as simple assault, possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and harassment.

These charges were approved by the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office.

Both individuals were arraigned before the Honorable Magistrate Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe, and remanded to the Carbon County Correctional Facility after their arraignment.

Lehighton police were assisted by Mahoning Township and Franklin Township police departments, along with the Pennsylvania State Police.
