Free dinner served

A free community dinner will be available at Zion Lutheran Church from 5 to 6 p.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville. That free meal is available by drive-thru pickup, no reservations required, and all are welcome.

The menu includes cheeseburgers with a tomato on the side, roasted summer vegetables, raw veggies with dip, dessert and a water bottle.

Altar & Rosary

Our Lady Queen of Peace church’s Altar & Rosary Society will meet at 6 p.m. today.

Tomorrow deadline

Tomorrow is the last day the PVEN (Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network) is accepting donations for its special drive for very much needed school supplies.

Those donations of various items can be brought to the PVEN Clothing Closet at 2338 Route 209, Sciota, and left in the donation bins on the porch at any time until the end of day.

WPLC meeting

The Western Pocono Lions Club will be meeting at 6 p.m., tomorrow, at Cherry’s Family Restaurant in Kresgeville.

Lunch last days

Only tomorrow and Friday of this week remain for the PVEN free summer lunches for children ages 18 and under at the Chestnuthill Park, Pavilion 1.

Lunches are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They must be eaten on site.

Senior Center menu

The Chestnuthill Senior Center, at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville, is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This coming Friday the menu is baked fish thermidor or egg salad. Next week Wednesday the two offerings are pork with mushroom or dill turkey.

Orders must be placed a day in advance by 11 a.m., by calling the center manager, Donna Riedel, at 570-242-6770, by 11 a.m. one day in advance.

Astronomy event

Friday at 4 p.m. is the grand opening of the astronomy observatory in Polk Township, as created by Boy Scout Claudio T. Stabile and helpers.

It begins with a viewing of the sun with solar telescopes and later switching to nighttime sky viewing.

The rain date is the next day.

Girlfriends brunch

The Girlfriends Group from Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church will be meeting for their brunch at the Terra Cottage in Lake Harmony on Saturday.

Those wishing to go should follow the church’s sign-up instructions.

Volunteer Day

American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, if having its Post Volunteer Day Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

WE Pantry hours

The West End Food Pantry, Kunkletown, is slated to be open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Saturday collection

Polk Township is participating in the Monroe County Meals on Wheels’ Household Essentials Day on Saturday. The collected non-food items will go to the Client Needs Pantry.

The West End Fair begins Sunday and runs through Aug. 26.

Fireworks at 9:30 p.m. are part of the start.

Farmer grants

Monroe County Conservation District has announced that grants are available for Monroe County farmers through the Agriculture Conservation Assistance Program.

The application process began Aug. 7.

For details, farmers can go to the Monroe County Conservation website or call the Monroe County Conservation District at 570-629-3060, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and ask for David Hooker.

SAL meeting

The Sons of the American Legion meeting is set for 7 p.m., Tuesday, at the Gilbert Post Home.

Public Bingo

American Legion Post 927 holds an open-to-the-public Bingo Night every Monday beginning with card sales at 6:30 p.m. Games begin at 7 p.m.

Family Fun Flicks

The free Fourth Friday Family Fun Flicks continue at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, Saylorsburg, on Aug. 25, beginning at dusk. The rain date is Sept. 1.

Featured will be THE CROODS.

There will be free popcorn.

Attendees are asked to bring a blanket or lawn chair for Movies Under the Stars.

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadville, reminds folks that its Parish Hall is available to rent for a variety of events.
