The Allentown Marine Band will present a concert this Sunday evening at 7:30 at West Park in Allentown, which is located at 16th & Linden streets in Allentown. The band is under the direction of Matthew Becker, former principal percussionist with the President’s Own United States Marine Band.
A featured soloist on the program will be Moravian University senior and 2020 Palmerton High School graduate Mitchell Hourt. Hourt joined the band just before the pandemic shutdown of 2020, and during his college years he has risen to principal trombonist and frequent soloist. He will perform Thoughts of Love by Arthur Pryor.
Also featured as a soloist will be another former US Marine Band percussionist, Brenda Weckerly, who will entertain with Leroy Anderson’s The Typewriter. The final soloist will be one of Weckerly’s very talented xylophone students from the Lansdale area, who will be joined by Becker and Weckerly in a trio entitled Serenade for a Picket Fence.
Another highlight of the concert will be a piece composed by Becker’s father, Raymond S. Becker, Jr., who also conducted the band from 1962-2006. It will again feature Mitchell Hourt, joined by fellow section members Tom Heinick and Tim Cramer. The piece is called A Bone-a-Fide Beguine.
Admission is free.
