Palmerton figures to be decked out in a sea of quilts next spring.
Judy Borger explained her vision for the Airing of the Quilts event to borough council on Thursday.
Borger, who was joined by Cindy Mengel-Smith, owner of the Quilted Crow, said they and a few other friends have been meeting and getting things organized.
She said the event will be staged in downtown Palmerton from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 11, and asked council for permission for use of the borough park that day.
Borger said the idea came from the former Airing of the Quilts event that had been held in Tunkhannock, and added it would essentially be a big quilt show.
“It’s to bring business into town,” Borger said. “And it’s a way for us to showcase what we love to do.”
Borger added the idea is to have the quilts outside and inside businesses all up and down Delaware Avenue, as well as some in the park.
She said there will be entertainment in the park’s bandstand, and added that a quilt show will be held in the Palmerton Area High School gym as well that day with speakers in the high school auditorium, quilt-related vendors, and a scavenger hunt (traditional quilts blocks).
“It’s an opportunity to showcase the town,” Borger said. “Our hope is to do this (on an annual basis).”
Borger said shuttle service will be provided from the high school to the downtown.
Council President Terry Costenbader told Borger to write out her plans submit to borough.
Borger said there would be about 500 quilts in the event.
Councilman Cory Kepner told Borger he and his wife enjoy the arts.
“I’m excited about this for you guys,” Kepner said. “We appreciate art.”
