Special program

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School will host the Dewey Bus Read-Aloud Loud Program from 5 to 7 tonight. This event is for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders.

Volunteers are to be on hand to help hand out snacks from 5 to 7 p.m. or to read-aloud to the younger group at 5 p.m. and grade students at 6 p.m.

The next Dewey Bus event will then take place on Aug. 9.

Dinner at Zion

The free community at Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, from 5 to 6 tonight will be hot dogs (with sauerkraut upon request), baked beans, pasta salad, watermelon, dessert and a water bottle.

Member picnic

Quiet Valley is holding its free members-only summer picnic at 6 tonight in the pavilion. It is a potluck event.

After the meal there will be wagon rides and homemade ice cream. The final summer picnic for members is on Aug. 17.

Polk calendar

The Polk Township Veterans Memorial Commission meeting is on the calendar for a 6 o’clock meeting tonight.

Altar & Rosary

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church’s Altar & Rosary is slated to meet at 6 p.m. today.

Other parishioners have been invited join the group at 7:30 p.m. for the Rosary.

Eldred Supervisors

The Eldred Township Board of Supervisors is slated to meet tonight at 7 p.m. at the municipal building in Kunkletown.

PV Board

The Pleasant Valley Board of Education is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Administrative Building.

League meeting

The WE Little League open meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Park on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Food pantry open

Effort UMC’s food pantry, the Supplemental Food Resource Center, will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Praise service

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, is hosting a praise service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Next week the focus will be healing and in the afternoon the church is presenting Communion at the Getz Personal Care Home in Jonas at 2 p.m.

All month long the church is collecting back-to-school items for the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network ranging from backpacks to school supplies, from white and black sneakers to underwear and personal care items.

Sunday supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace church is hosting its next Community Sunday Supper at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Preschool registration

Effort UMC is now accepting preschool registration for Just 3’s and Pre-K’s for the 2023-2024 school year.

Blood drive

The Western Pocono Community Library, on Pilgrim Way, is hosting another Miller-Keystone blood drive on Monday. Being accepted are whole blood, double red cells and platelets.

SAL meeting

The Sons of the American Legion, Post 927, is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Post home in Gilbert.

WE Republicans

The West End Republican Club is set to meet at Cherry’s Family Restaurant at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Those planning to eat dinner there are asked to come an hour earlier.

QV needs

Monroe County‘s living historical farm, Quiet Valley, can use pint-size canning jars for anyone who has some to give away or wishes to purchase them for QV. Anyone with questions, call 570-992-6161.

Amazing stats

The PVEN continues to serve an amazing number of people. For the month of June, the numbers are: Food Pantry, 220 families, 841 individuals; Clothing Closet, 33 families, 120 individuals; Diaper Pantry, 88 families served; and Menstrual Hygiene Pantry, 128 individuals served.

With that many folks needing/being helped, the PVEN needs lots of help for the upcoming August Back to School Extravaganza. Needed are sneakers for boys, girls, men and women; socks-sizes for boys, girls, men and women; underwear, including hipsters for girls and women, and boxer briefs for boys and men; and personal care items, such as deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and body wash.

The Food Pantry can use cake mixes, pancake mixes, coffee and pancake syrup.

The Clothing Closet can use: body wash, toothbrushes, razors, and shaving cream.

Other needs include cleaning supplies, bed linens and blankets, baby food and baby formula.
