3 died in July 4 crashes, state police report

Pennsylvania State Police said three people died in traffic crashes across the state during the five-day Fourth of July holiday period.

Police investigated 668 crashes, in which there were three deaths, and 194 people injured from June 30 to July 4. Alcohol was a factor in 59 of the non-fatal crashes, police said.

The 668 crashes are 17 more than what police investigated in 2022, although that holiday period covered four days. Four people died in holiday crashes last year, while 170 were injured. The alcohol-related crashes from a year ago were 52.

This year, troopers made 505 arrests for driving under the influence and issued 23,738 traffic citations. They included citations written to 845 people for not wearing seat belts and 210 tickets given to drivers for not securing children in safety seats.

The 505 DUI arrests are 10 less than were made in 2022 while the seat belt tickets this year were significantly less than the 986 written a year ago. Child safety tickets were 87 less than the 297 issues in 2022.

State police said the statistics cover only those incidents investigated by state police and do not include incidents to which other law enforcement agencies responded.
