Letter to the Editor: Cyclist worries about D&L Trail crossing

I have become an avid cyclist and enjoy riding the D&L trail. I am very concerned and nervous every time I leave Weissport canal area to connect with the trail on the Lehighton side.

Weissport is a speedway to beat the traffic on the McCall bridge resulting in speeding cars zooming past. I usually ride the sidewalks but they are not proper to ride and are lacking in some areas. Many times I get screamed at to get out of the way or that I’m going to “get myself killed.” Yes, I fear that! There is designated lanes on the Weissport bridge but after that you are on your own to share the road with speeding cars. If you follow road etiquette, you then have to cross over traffic when returning to the canal trail.

Will it take someone to get seriously hurt or killed before some changes are made?

I suggest parking on one side of the street to designate a true bike lane but I know the residents will argue that. Maybe direct the trail behind the homes and connect to the bridge at Hoffard Mills. I don’t know what a true solution would be, but am hoping the borough and the “trail” directors can come up with a different route. Be safe out there.

Sincerely,

Kathy Herman
