Zion Opera Workshop to present musical revue

In collaboration with Zion UCC’s sesquicentennial celebration, Zion Opera Workshop will present a musical revue featuring current and past members of the workshop.

The event is at 7 p.m. Saturday in Smith Auditorium of Zion UCC. The choral event will be free to the public, but a free will offering will be accepted which will benefit Zion UCC’s ministries.

Bob Zellner, a member of the very first workshop production, has come back to join the choral section of the presentation.

The program opens with the popular Ballad from Dear Evan Hansen entitled “You Will Be Found.” Featured soloists include Brandon Cressley, Abby Ehrig and Nicole Kester.

Following the full cast number, Nicholas Hrusovsky will perform “Giants in the Sky” from Into the Woods. Michelle Stoudt will then perform “People from Funny Girl.”

Abby-Rae Knappenberger will perform “World Burn” from the Mean Girls Musical, and will be followed by Kristen Campbell performing “Second Hand White Baby Grand,” which was featured in the Broadway musical themed TV show Smash.

Nicole Kester will open the next portion of the show with “She Used to be Mine” from Waitress, and Casi Reichard will follow doing a rendition of “Burn” from Hamilton. Lydia Hessinger will follow that singing “What I Did for Love” from A Chorus Line.

In addition to solo acts, several duets will be performed, the first of which is the wildly popular song “For Good” from Wicked, which will be performed by Abby-Rae Knappenberger and Kristen Campbell.

The group’s director, Brad Cressley, will make a rare appearance on the stage with a rendition of “Evermore” from the movie version of Beauty and the Beast.

Laura Reichard, who is also the director of Zion Opera Workshop Junior, will present “Watch What Happens from the Newsies.” Long-time member Martha Cox will then present “Free at Last” from Big River. Nicholas Hursovsky will return to the stage for “Confrontation” from Jekyll and Hyde.

Mother, father and daughter team of Brad and Beth Cressley and Laura Reichard will perform the trio “Requiem” from Dear Evan Hansen. Casi Reichard and Lydia Hessinger will then perform “When You Believe” from Prince of Egypt.

From there, “Children of the Wind” will be a piano solo by Michelle Stoudt. This song is featured in the musical Rags.

Laura Reichard and Abby Ehrig will then perform “Some Things are Meant to be” from Little Women. Accompanists for the event are Laura Reichard, Michelle Stoudt and Calvin Maholick.

The final number of the program is “Shrek the Musical Medley.” Pending licensing, this is the show being planned for ZOW’s 2024 show.

“This will be an entertaining show,” Cressley said. “We hope many will come out to support the performers, as well as help celebrate Zion’s 150 years of ministry. Rehearsals have been very impressive.”
