Palmerton pool to open Saturday

Palmerton Memorial Pool is ready for a Memorial Day weekend opening.

Lee Arner, general manager, said the pool will be open Memorial Day weekend from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and noon to 8 p.m. Monday.

Arner said the pool will then be open from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on days when students have full-days, and 1 to 8 when students have half-days.

Regular pool hours will begin June 3 when the pool is open from noon to 8 p.m. (10 a.m. to noon for lap swimming and adult lap walking only) on Saturdays, 1 to 8 p.m. Sundays, and noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Arner said the cost for daily admission is $12 for adults, and $8 for children.

Those who live in the Palmerton Area School District can get a 12-visit pass for $100 until June 4.

Arner said many things had to be done before the pool could get to this point.

In addition to work done behind the scenes, he said there were three valves done by Bellview pump to make sure the pool is operational. The Behler Foundation donated funds for two of those valves.

Arner said that A.J. Kerekes, of Cherryville, installed a new roof on the refreshment stand, office and bathhouses. Brandon Buck, of B & P Reliable Tree Service, and Frank Korman donated their time and manpower to remove trees by the entranceway, and other volunteers assisted with tree removal.

Arner said the new assistant manager is Haylee Strubinger.

He noted the election of board members resulted in several new people stepping up.

Arner added that grant funding has been applied for with an eye toward future renovations.

Don Herrmann, president of the pool’s board of directors, said they are excited to open for the season.

“The size alone, tradition, and what it means to the community, it’s part of people’s lives,” Herrmann said. “It’s just so tranquil.”

They are always looking for volunteers, Herrmann said.

Season passes are available at palmertonpool.com, or stop by the pool office for membership.
