May 27, 2011 - Tamaqua’s Kayla Hope captures a state gold medal in the long jump on the final jump of the competition. Hope, a junior, breaks her own personal record with her first jump when she posts a distance of 17-10. On her second try, she soars 18-0 before improving on that on her third attempt - 18-8 - to take over first heading into the finals. Her mark holds up until the third to last jumper - Erikka Williams of Rochester - registers an 18-10 1/4 to take over the lead. Hope, however, goes 18-10 3/4 with her last jump to claim her state title.
