Picnic, car show at Lansford’s No. 9 Mine

The No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford is hosting its annual Miners Picnic and AACA Car Show Sunday.

Festivities at the historic site on Dock Street begin at 11 a.m. and continue through 4 p.m.

The Anthracite Region Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America will present the car show featuring, antiques, classics and street rods. Anyone wishing to display their automobile can register when they arrive on Sunday. There are no registration fees and it is rain or shine.

Visitors can also tour the historic coal mine, which first opened in 1855. Tours are about one-hour long, and include the mine train deep into the mine, where visitors embark on a walking tour viewing the massive elevator shaft, mule-ways, an underground hospital, Go Devil and the work areas of the miners. The temperature inside the mine remains about 52 degrees year round.

People are also invited to browse the area’s largest coal mining museum and gift shop inside a historic brick building that served as the miners’ wash shanty. The museum building, which was built in 1912, is filled with artifacts and exhibits, many of which have been recently updated. A restored, high-lift coal delivery truck from Rarick’s Coal will also be on display.

“While visiting, we invite everyone to check all of the improvements made since last year, including the restoration of the museum roof, new entrance doors and many changes to the inside of the museum, including the removal of the false ceiling,” said Dale Freudenberger, secretary.

Admission to the car show, picnic grounds and museum is free, but a fee is charged for the mine tours. Food, including ethnic and regional favorites, such as halupki, haluski, pierogies, turkey barbecue, ham and bean soup, hot dogs, and homemade desserts will also be available for sale and takeouts beginning at 11 a.m. Basket raffle tickets will also be available. Mucis will be by disc jockey Shawn Frederickson,
