Nesquehoning to add borough manager

Nesquehoning is changing course after its longtime borough secretary resigned to take another job.

RoniSue Ahner was hired by Lower Towamensing Township earlier this month as its new secretary/treasurer. She had previously served as Nesquehoning’s borough secretary for the last 17 years. Her final day is today.

She said earlier this week that she wishes nothing but the best for Nesquehoning.

On Wednesday, the borough published a public notice in the Times News that proposes amending the code of ordinances regarding establishing the position of a borough manager.

Council President David Hawk said on Thursday that after Ahner’s departure, discussion led to changing direction in its management.

“Council has seen how successful neighboring boroughs have been with borough managers obtaining grants and providing full time day-to-day management duties, beyond the scope of a secretary/treasurer, for council, many of whom have limited availability during the normal business day,” Hawk said. “We probably would not have pursued a borough manager at this time, but the opportunity has presented itself and we believe it is an opportunity to grow and improve the borough.”

Borough council will further discuss the matter during its monthly meeting next Wednesday.
