Man charged with trying to hit police with floor board

A Lehighton man has been charged after he attempted to hit police with floor board he ripped up during a burglary, police said.

At 6:40 a.m. May 11, Lehighton Borough Police were dispatched to a burglary in the 100 block of South First Street. Upon arrival, police were told there was a man inside the residence, and he smashed the rear window to get in.

When police got into the residence, Mike Messinger, 34, attempted to hit police with a floor board that he had ripped up, police said.

Messinger was taken into custody. At the police station, Messinger attempted to escape but was stopped before he got out, police said.

Messinger was taken to the Carbon County Correctional Facility and is facing burglary, criminal trespass, attempted escape, attempted simple assault, criminal mischief, and resisting arrest.

He was placed on $50,000 straight bail when arraigned.
