A bell tower at a church in Ross Township was damaged by fire Wednesday afternoon.
Leon Clapper, fire chief for Blue Ridge Hook & Ladder Fire Company, said the fire broke out around 2 p.m. at the bell tower at Mount Eaton Church at 7277 Mount Eaton Road in Saylorsburg,
“Shrubs caught on fire, and once the shrubs and mulch caught on fire, it went into the bell tower, melted the vinyl siding, continued on up the bell tower for about 40 feet,” Clapper said. “The bell tower had flames showing when we arrived.”
Clapper said there was a quick response from the departments that were there, as some departments were cleaning up from a brush fire and already had stuff on the road.
He said about 150 gallons of water was used, and added the fire was knocked down in under less than five minutes.
“It was a great knock down,” Clapper said. “A great job by all as always.”
Clapper said there was moderate damage done to the bell tower.
He added there were people working around the church, but that there were no injuries.
Clapper said the cause of the fire is accidental.
He said firefighters remained on scene for about 45 minutes.
Clapper said also assisting at the scene were West End Fire Company, Polk Fire Company, Kunkletown Fire Company, and Pocono Lehigh Valley Ambulance from Monroe County, along with Wind Gap Fire Company and Plainfield Fire Company from Northampton County.
