Carbon gets $2.7 M in C & Y payments

Carbon County has received nearly $3 million of the money owed from the state.

On Thursday, the commissioners spoke about the funds it has received as part of owed reimbursements for the county’s Children and Youth Services Department.

Commissioner Rocky Ahner, who was absent at Thursday’s meeting, said on Tuesday afternoon that the county has received $2,707,996 from the state.

The state, which reimburses counties 80% for Children and Youth Services, had been behind in paying for over a year. As a result, the delay caused Carbon to issue a $4 million loan in March to help with its operations until the reimbursements are paid.

The loan is coming from the county capital projects coffer with an interest rate of 4.25% per year.

On Thursday, Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said that the money the county has received will go towards paying off the loan in June, but “we’re not at that point yet to actually pay that loan off.”

This month, the county will begin receiving the larger portions of the tax revenue, which will then allow for the loan repayment to take place.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that while the state has paid Carbon a good chunk of funds for the department, it is still behind on reimbursement payments.
