May 9, 1952 - Tamaqua’s Jack Burcin and Lansford’s Steve Vitek both earn gold medals at the first-ever Southern Division Eastern Conference track & field meet. Burcin captures the high jump by clearing 5-6, while Vitek throws the javelin 151-2 to win that event. Burcin also turns in a second-place finish, ending runner-up in the broad jump. Other area athletes to place second include Tamaqua’s Bob Burcin (pole vault) and John Uzick (discus), Coaldale’s Andy Keer (shot put) and Robert Mellay (javelin), and Lansford’s John Gallagher (880). Summit Hill’s Francis Macalush and Lansford’s Frank Zlock both finish tied for second in the high jump.
