Monroe teen charged after ‘swatting calls’

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks have announced the arrest of a 17-year-old male in connection with an investigation into “swatting calls,” described by police as incidents when a person calls 911 and describes an emergency happening at a location when it really isn’t happening.

In a petition filed in juvenile court, police charged the boy with possession of child pornography, false alarms, false reports and possession of instruments of a crime. He is currently lodged at the Bucks County Juvenile Detention Center while he awaits his preliminary hearing.

Police said their investigation started on April 10 when they were contacted by the Collin County Sheriff’s Office in Texas in regards to the “swatting calls.” Through their investigation, which included digital forensics, an address in Jackson Township, Monroe County, was established as the location initiating these calls.

Police said on May 2, investigators from the Collin County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant on the Monroe address. During a forensic download of the juvenile’s computer, a total of nine “swatting calls” were discovered to be made to Florida, Oregon, California, Tennessee and Kentucky, along with other locations throughout the country. Additionally, child pornography was discovered on the juvenile’s computer, resulting in the juvenile being taken into custody and charged.
