Man charged in Carbon shooting
A Walnutport man was charged Thursday afternoon in the shooting Saturday on Hahns Dairy Road in Lower Towamensing Township.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by the Pennsylvania State Police in Lehighton in the case against Ivan Jordan Gonzales, 18:
At 3:33 p.m. Saturday, state police were dispatched to the 1200 block of Hahns Dairy Road for the report of a 19-year-old male gunshot victim.
Troopers met Kadin Paul Brunell, who was shot in his left shoulder.
Brunell advised troopers on scene that he was shot at the bottom of the driveway by an occupant of a red sedan with black rims and window tint. Brunell was taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest for further medical treatment.
Brunell’s grandfather said Kadin Brunell walked outside of the house and shortly after, he heard one gunshot and tires screeching.
He said Brunell re-entered the residence and he called 911 and applied pressure to the wound with a towel.
Police reviewed surveillance footage and saw Brunell at the car, and then the car speeding away. Brunell is seen running to the house with an obvious wounded left shoulder.
At 5:27 p.m. state police were contacted by Walnutport Police Department officer Scott Ledo, who said that he was dispatched to the 400 block of North Best Avenue, Walnutport (the former Kmart) to speak with two women who were allegedly involved with this incident.
Ledo said that the women said the shooter was Gonzales, and they dropped off at the Hillcrest Apartments in Slatington.
The women said they parked the involved vehicle, a 2013 Hyundai, Genesis Coupe in Slatington.
The Hyundai was located by Slatington Police Department at Yenser Alley/Cherry Street, Slatington, and was seized and towed to the PSP Lehighton barracks, pending an application for search warrant.
One woman told police Gonzales contacted the other for a ride to pick up “bud,” so they picked him up at his girlfriend’s residence in Palmerton.
The woman said that she sat in the rear passenger seat and the other woman drove. Gonzales was the front seat passenger wearing a black mask, black pants, a white hoodie, a black vest and black boots.
She said that Gonzales used his telephone GPS for directions to the home on Hahns Dairy Road. When they got there, they first passed the victim and then turned around. He was at the end of his driveway and Gonzales talked to him and ultimately shot the victim one time before the driver sped away.
The woman stated, “people die every day he’ll be ok” and then said Gonzales stated “the ‘n’ word people die every day he’ll be ok.”
The woman said they drove Gonzales to the 100 steps in Slatington and dropped him off. She parked the vehicle in Slatington and went to her friend’s residence before contacting Walnutport Police Department.
The other woman said that Gonzales contacted her via FaceTime to pick up “bud.”
She said that she and the other woman were often contacted by Gonzales for rides to pick up “bud” in exchange for money.
Once at the victim’s residence, she said she observed in Gonzales’ chamber a round in a black handgun. Gonzales rolled down the window and the victim approached the vehicle and began handing a bag of marijuana to Gonzales. The victim asked where the money was. Gonzales grabbed the zip lock bag and raised the handgun into the victim’s view and subsequently fired one shot, court papers say.
The woman said she then sped away from the scene, and advised that Gonzales has been known to recently be robbing drug dealers in the area.
Brunell was interviewed at Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest. He said he was standing at the end of his driveway waiting for his brother and his friend to pick him up, and that while waiting for his ride, a red sedan with black rims and window tint pulled to the front of his driveway so he went to see if they needed help.
Brunell said that the vehicle was occupied by three people, and that he made contact with the front seat passenger who presented a handgun and shot him once in the left shoulder before the vehicle sped off and he ran into the residence for help.
Search warrants were issued for the car and the victim’s bedroom.
Items seized from the Brunell’s bedroom were drugs, drug paraphernalia, a large amount of cash and items consistent with drug packaging and distribution.
In the Hyundai, police found one 9 mm shell casting from the passenger side of the vehicle.
Gonzales is in Carbon County Prison on charges of criminal attempt - criminal homicide; aggravated assault - attempts to cause injury with extreme indifference; aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; and recklessly endangering another person and criminal use of communication facility.
Gonzales was arraigned by District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton, who denied bail.
