L. Towamensing approves new borough secretary

Lower Towamensing Township has a new secretary/treasurer.

The supervisors approved hiring RoniSue Ahner at their meeting on Tuesday night. Ahner has 17 years of experience as a municipal secretary with the Borough of Nesquehoning.

Brent Green, the chairman of the supervisors, said the township was fortunate to have some good candidates to pick from and chose Ahner from the group.

“She actually has been coming in during the day and evening hours to assist with limited things, and has been an asset already,” Green said.

Ahner began work on April 10, but her employment had to be officially approved at the May meeting. She will be in the office full-time starting in June.

“I’m happy to be here,” Ahner said after the meeting.

Ahner is the second new secretary/treasurer since March 2022 when Jennifer Ketchledge was hired to replace Christine Wentz. Wentz left in September 2021, and Ketchledge left in March 2023. Both left for new job opportunities. Ahner’s new pay will be $25 per hour.

In other business, resident Steve Meining asked the supervisors about hiring a constable who would also take over the duties of the zoning code enforcement officer. Green said that he talked to one man, but the person wasn’t sure he wanted to do the job.

The supervisors approved having Debra Miller as the library representative for the township. They also approved giving a $5,000 donation to the Palmerton Library.

“The only reason we do fund them is as part of their state licensing and the requirements they get for state funding,” Green said. “There has to be a contribution based on the number of residents from each municipality they represent for their state.”

The township is planning to host two electronic recycling events. They will be on June 3 and Sept. 23. The recycling event is only for Lower Towamensing Township residents.
