CARBON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

The Carbon County Commissioners acted on or discussed the following items during Thursday’s meeting. Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein was absent.

• Carbon County welcomed high school students from Carbon Career & Technical Institute, Jim Thorpe, Marian Catholic, Palmerton, Panther Valley and Weatherly for the annual Government Day. The event provides students with a hands-on view of various departments in the county and how county government operates.

• Coroner Robert Miller asked the board why Lehighton Fire Department is the only fire company to bill when a lift assist is needed. He said that he received a bill from 2019 that was for an assist that he didn’t call in. He noted that Nothstein, who is also a member of the fire company, found money in the county budget to pay the bill even though Miller said that it should not be paid because he did not call for the assist, rather it was the ambulance who called.

• Approved a proposal with Vistacom of Allentown for audio and visual conferencing equipment for courtroom 1, as well as managed services for five years at a total cost of $156,980.28. This proposal falls under a Costars contract.

• Approved the 2023-2024 Hazardous Materials Response Fund budget in the amount of $7,310.

• Commissioner Rocky Ahner commended Sheriff Dan Zeigler regarding the recent ALERRT active shooter training that took place the last two weeks at the new Emergency Operations Training Center.
