State police at Hazleton - Crashes

State police at the Hazleton barracks reported on several incidents:

• The driver of a vehicle that struck a mailbox at 880 Hudson Drive, Packer Township, fled the scene.

It happened at 5:08 p.m. March 25 when the vehicle was traveling east and left the road for some reason, striking the mailbox.

• A 16-year-old boy from Hazle Township had minor injuries in a one-vehicle crash at 8:32 p.m. April 15 on Spring Mountain Road in Packer Township.

Police said he was driving a 2007 BMW south at a high rate of speed when he failed to stop for a stop sign due to wet conditions at the intersection with the Quakake Road. The car struck a guide rail and multiple tombstones before coming to rest in the Packer Cemetery.

Police said the boy was taken by his mother to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton, for a medical evaluation.

He was cited for careless driving, police said.

• Michael R. Weideman, 34, of Tamaqua, was injured in a one-vehicle rash at 10:48 p.m. April 14 on Interstate 81 in Hazle Township.

Police said he was transported by personnel from the Greater Hazleton Ambulance Service to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton, for minor chest pain.

Police said he was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse when he lost control of the vehicle. It traveled onto the median and struck a tree, then continued forward striking a second tree and coming to rest on the median.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Police said Weideman was cited.
