Bears on the roam, looking for the nearest garbage bag

It’s that time of year again.

Bear season.

On Wednesday, Nesquehoning Councilwoman Abbie Guardiani, chairperson of the sanitation committee, issued a reminder to residents that bears frequent the town in search of food and trash is a delicacy.

Guardiani said that trash should be bagged and put into containers with lids.

She stressed that just bagging your garbage may not be enough and bears can easily rip it open, creating a mess for you and your neighbor.

“They’re hungry and it’s not their fault,” she said, adding that the borough workers have been receiving complaints of garbage bags being torn apart and trash all over properties.

Guardiani joked that it wouldn’t really be an easy task to arrest the bears for littering so she urged residents to try and do their part to deter the bears.

Ammonia sprayed on trash is one way that people say helps deter bears from eating the garbage.

Another way is bear proof trash cans.

“We’re in their territory,” Guardiani said. “All I could ask is that you do the best you can with your trash.”

In other matters, the borough is looking at holding an electronics recycling event again this year.

A date has yet to be set. More details will be released at a later time.
